Tradition and emotion
the holy week “cofradías”
There are two events that bring Seville to a halt: the Holy Week and the Feria de Abril.
Today, we take you on a tour to discover the “Cofradías”. The people behind one of the most emotional and electrifying Holy Weeks in Spain and perhaps the World.
A local “cofrade” will guide you throughout the horse-drawn carriage tour, explaining the tradition, the meaning and the emotion behind the ritual whilst admiring the city’s landmarks. Truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn what happens behind the scenes of this iconic and unique celebration.
Tradition leads to tradition: lunch takes place at “El Cabildo’s” private terrace, a favorite amongst the locals.
The visit starts at 10AM. when the carriage will pick you up at the hotel door. Once on board, our “cofrade” will begin unveiling the history and details behind the “cofradías”, the “pasos” and the passion and faith that make it all possible.
The first stop will be the Basilica de la Macarena, followed by the rest of the classics that take part in the Holy Week in Seville as well as the Basílica de El Gran Poder and the Cofradia de la Esperanza de Triana, two of the most antiques in Triana and Seville dating back to the 15th century.
Lunch will take place at the “El Cabildo’s” private terrace, a classic amongst the locals and where one of the best examples of the local cuisine is offered.
When lunch is over it is time to resume the tour with a visit to the Cathedral, which is not only a World Heritage but also the biggest church in the world.
Our last stop before heading back to the hotel will be a visit to a traditional imagery workshop, where traditional artisans produce and restore the religious statutes used during the Holly Week.
